3 Brothers and their Father

One year after Henry arrived in the United States and two years after Bernard's arrival, two more members of the Imwalle family made it across the Atlantic to arrive in America.

In 1858, Joseph, the youngest brother of Henry and Bernard, boarded a ship called the "Nord Amerika," with his father, Matthais, from the port at Bremen.  This was very risky, because at the time, Matthais was 63 years old.  Not only was the journey across the Atlantic probably very hard for an older man, but immigration officials had rules about age, and Matthias was over the age limit.  It may have been luck, or it may have been a little "white lie," but Matthais made it through the strict immigration process at Ellis Island in New York City.

Matthais and Joseph made their way to Cincinnati to join the others.  It must have been a joyous reunion for the three brothers and their father to be together again, and so far from Germany.  After arriving in Cincinnati, Joseph was able to use his sewing skills and ended up becoming a successful tailor on Main Street in Cincinnati.  Matthais spent the rest of his years living with Bernard and his wife at a home on 3rd and Butler streets in Cincinnati, where Bernard's grocery was located.

The family enjoyed many happy years in their new city.  Matthais lived to be 84 years old and died in Cincinnati, on March 31st, 1879.  Henry, the middle brother outlived both of his brothers.  Bernard only lived to be 68, and Joseph 63.  Henry had a heart attack and died on July 11, 1921 in Cincinnati, at the age of 88 years old..   His wife, Maria passed on February 5, 1926.
