From Rudolf to Henry

Rudolf Heinrich decided to follow his older brother Bernard and also emigrated to New Orleans just one year later in 1857!  Can you imagine how hard it must have been for these brothers to leave their family?

Rudolf's trip across the Atlantic Ocean was much like his brother's.  He boarded a ship called the  "Achilles" in Bremen and also landed in New Orleans, Louisiana in September of 1857.
Rudolf's voyage across the Atlantic took 40 days.  On these long trips across the ocean, many immigrants became seasick, as the boat traveled the high seas.  Other folks may have been very hungry, as they were not given much food, and many people got sick from living so close to each other and the unclean conditions on board.

Rudolf finally made it to New Orleans, and once he got there, the immigration officials encouraged him to change his name.  In these days the immigration authorities encouraged Germans to change their names to English or American sounding names. So Rudolf decided to use his middle name; Heinrich, which is German for Henry. People he met in America would know him as Henry, not Rudolf.

Henry, excited to have made it successfully to America, boarded a steamboat and headed up the Ohio river to meet up with his older brother in Cincinnati, Ohio.
